Each day one of the first things we hear is this: "It's a beautiful day!" This morning was no exception. Many of us went down to the shore of the Sea of Galilee to watch the sun rise and together we sang Great is Thy Faithfulness and When Morning Gilds the Sky. Somehow songs that are long familiar to us, take on new meaning as we sing them in this place.
Yet another day chocked full of wonder.
Gamla, which means camel, was the home to zealots and is located in the Golan Heights at the edge of the Rift Valley. Our discussion surrounded the history of Gamla and the zealots who settled here after which we hiked to the oldest known excavated synagogue in the world. There we pondered the exclusivity of this group of people trying to protect their worship and contrasted the example of Jesus who extended the kingdom to all.
From Gamla we traveled to Sousita where we remembered Jesus casting out the demons of Legion and his instruction to him to "Go and tell."
A late lunch preceded a stop in the ancient city of Bethsaida, thought to be the home of the fisherman--perhaps Peter? Also, search your Bibles for the Absalom connection to Bethsaida.
A final and meaningful stop was time spent at a quiet place along the Jordan River where we committed to entering the chaos of life and dedicated our heads, our hearts, our hands and our feet to service in a broken world.
